What does the rent include?

Rental of the apartment for one month, as well as heat, water and a utility allowance. The utility allowance is a certain amount taken off of the resident’s rent payment, to help the resident pay the utility bills. The allowance amount is based on average usage for the apartment and may change annually. Residents will still receive gas and electric bills, but the allowance is intended to help pay for them. Residents may also still be eligible for energy assistance from other sources.

How big are the apartments?

Kemet House offers modest studio and one-bedroom apartments, as well as a few more-accessible apartments for the mobility impaired. The square footage; studio apartments are approximately 396 square feet. One-bedroom apartments and accessible apartments are approximately 516 square feet.

How do I begin the move-in process?

Simply fill out an application completely, sign it and mail it to the address on the back of the application.

Is there a waiting list for residency?

Yes, currently Kemet House has a waiting list. Please call for the approximate waiting time.

What is the Security Deposit?

The Security Deposit is the same as one month’s full rent (before the utility allowance) with a minimum of $50. This deposit is due in full at the signing of the lease.

Do you allow pets?

Kemet House welcomes you to bring your pets along with you. Fish and birds are welcomed without a deposit. We also welcome small dogs and cats with a pet deposit. There is a limit of one cat or dog per apartment and there are certain size and breed restrictions.

Is there an elevator?

Yes, there in one elevator located in the center of the building easily accessible by all residents, on all floors, and each wing of the building.

Are there any planned activities?

Kemet House prints a monthly calendar showing the dates and times of various activities. Monthly activities include bingo, card games, board games, pot-luck meals, seasonal activities such as gardening, and knitting/sewing for our Project H.A.N.D.S. program.

Are there on-site laundry facilities?

There is a laundry center at Kemet House, containing two coin-operated washers and two coin-operated dryers with a folding area for the convenience of our residents. This center is located on the ground floor.

Do you have 2 or 3 bedrooms in your community?

No, we have a studio and one-bedroom apartments.

Is your community racially diverse?

Kemet House is racially diverse, however, it should be noted that Kemet House and Retirement Housing Foundation abide by the Federal Fair Housing Act, in addition to complying with all housing laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Admission criteria for residency is listed in our “Tenant Selection Plan” which is available to any interested party upon request.
