Deaconess-Zane Center
Deaconess-Zane Center is a six-story apartment community specifically designed for older adults who are at least 62 years of age as well as a limited number of non-elderly disabled individuals 18 years and older. There are 64 one-bedroom units, five efficiency units and one unit for a live-in custodian. Three of the one-bedroom units and all five of the efficiency units are handicap accessible designed to benefit the mobility impaired and the building is equipped for those who are hearing and/or visually impaired.
The community is located in Cleveland’s historic Old Brooklyn neighborhood on the near west side and is in close proximity to a post office, pharmacies,
restaurants, retail business, churches, medical and dental offices, and public transportation. The community neighbors the MetroHealth Old Brooklyn Campus and Senior Health and Wellness Center where there is access to physicians of many different specialties as well as a pharmacy, beauty shop, and a cafeteria.
Deaconess-Zane Center has a spacious lobby area and community room on the first floor that has ample seating areas and abundant amounts of natural light where they can socialize with friends and neighbors, play games or build puzzles, play the organ, or watch their favorite shows on a 56-inch big screen TV.
The community is also directly across the street from our sister facility, Deaconess-Krafft Center. Deaconess-Krafft Center features a large attached Senior Center that is operated by Senior Citizen Resources, Inc. (SCR), a local non-profit organization whose mission is to provide supportive services to Seniors in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is available to residents of Deaconess-Krafft Center and Deaconess-Zane Center as well as Seniors living in the surrounding community. A full range of services are available to participants at little or no cost including a daily hot meal program Monday through Friday, homebound meals-on-wheels, various recreational activities (bingo, card parties, crafts, games, exercise, line dancing, computer classes, special trips, and Senior Olympics), transportation to medical appointments and shopping, Post Office-On-Wheels, nurse consultations, health screenings, educational seminars, annual flu and pneumonia vaccination program, and volunteer placement. SCR also provides a wide array of social services to assist participants deal with various personal issues such as Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement, Social Security and SSI assistance, medical or prescription issues, nutrition, intervention, advocacy, and family involvement.
Deaconess-Zane Center residents also have access to the outside Courtyard at Deaconess-Krafft Center with benches, a picnic table, an arbor and fountain providing a tranquil outdoor space for relaxation and socialization. There are two laundry rooms equipped with coin-operated washers and dryers and folding tables enabling the residents to do their laundry on site.
The management offices are located on the first floor at Deaconess-Zane Center for ease in communication for the residents. There are supportive maintenance areas dedicated to the continued maintenance and operation of the community. There are trash collection rooms/chutes on each floor. An answering service is available for residents with maintenance emergencies both before and after office hours and on weekends and holidays.
The community has a “key FOB” door entry system as well as automatic doors for the resident’s convenience and added security.
Each resident’s unit is accessed through interior corridors. The typical unit design provides either a one bedroom or efficiency, a kitchen with a pass-through counter, refrigerator, range, and vent.
The mobility impaired, accessible units have roll-in showers for ease of access for those residents in wheelchairs. They also have appropriate appliances, counter and sinks, and turning radius to meet the special needs of the mobility impaired.

What type of housing is Deaconess-Zane Center? Is it low-income housing?
Deaconess-Zane Center is a subsidized housing community for seniors age 62 & over as well as a limited number of non-elderly disabled individuals 18 years and older. The term “subsidized housing” means that the rent is based on income. A resident of the community pays approximately 30% of their income as rent.
Who pays the remainder of the rent?
The remainder of the rent is paid in the form of a subsidy. If a resident qualifies for a subsidy, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a U.S. government agency, will pay the remainder of the rent.
How is rent calculated?
Resident rent is based on approximately 30% of income. A good estimate of your rent would be to take 30% of your gross annual income and divide it by 12 months. This will give you an estimate of what your monthly rent could be.
What does the rent include?
Monthly rental of the apartment, all utilities except phone and cable TV, and trash removal.
Is there a lease?
Yes, there is a one-year lease, but we understand the necessity of unanticipated move-outs. After you complete your first year, the lease reverts to a month-to-month basis.
How many apartments are there?
Deaconess-Zane Center has 69 resident apartments.
How big are the apartments?
Deaconess-Zane Center offers spacious one-bedroom apartments and a small number of efficiency units all with accessible features, as well as a few more-accessible apartments for the sensory/mobility impaired. One-bedroom apartments are approximately 550 square feet and efficiency units are approximately 410 square feet.
How do I get started with the move-in process?
Simply fill out an application completely, sign it and mail it to the address on the back of the application.
Is there a waiting list for residency?
Yes, currently Deaconess-Zane Center has a waiting list. Please call for the approximate waiting time.
What is the Security Deposit?
The Security Deposit is the same as one month’s full rent. This deposit is due in full at the signing of the lease.
Do you allow pets?
Deaconess-Zane Center welcomes you to bring your pet along with you. Fish and birds are welcomed without a deposit. We also welcome a small dog or a cat with a pet deposit. There is a limit of one animal (cat or dog) per apartment and there are certain size and breed restrictions.
What is the Pet Deposit?
The refundable pet deposit is $300. Payment arrangements can be made for this deposit. Beginning with $50 and then a monthly payment of $10 until the deposit is paid in full.
Is there additional storage space available?
There is no additional storage available, however, each apartment offers ample closet and storage space.
Is there an elevator?
Yes, there are two elevators located in the center of the building easily accessible by all residents, on all floors.
Is parking available?
Yes, Deaconess-Zane Center offers its residents the use of a large parking lot.
What is the cost for parking?
There is no cost for parking.
How many keys do I receive?
Residents receive an apartment key, a key to a locked mailbox for their apartment, and an access key FOB to the main entry. Both the main entrance and the parking lot entrance are controlled by a key FOB and the doors automatically open with the key.
Are there any planned activities?
Deaconess-Zane Center residents are encouraged to participate in activities at our sister facility, Deaconess-Krafft Center, directly across the street from Deaconess-Zane Center. The Deaconess-Krafft Center Senior Center is operated by a local non-profit organization, Senior Citizen Resources, Inc., who print and distribute a monthly calendar and newsletter showing the dates and times of various activities. Activities include a daily hot meal program Monday through Friday, bingo, board games, exercise, line dancing, computer classes and more. There is also a puzzle and craft room used daily for putting together puzzles and other various crafting projects.
Are there on-site laundry facilities?
There are two laundry rooms at Deaconess-Zane Center located on the third and fourth floors. In all, there are four coin-operated washers and four coin-operated dryers with folding and hanging areas, and a wash sink for the convenience of our residents.
What is the garbage/recycling process?
There is a garbage center on each floor of the building specifically for garbage purposes. On the upper floors, there is a chute to dispose of trash directly into a dumpster.
Is there any public transportation available?
Yes, currently the Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has several routes within just a few minutes walk. Senior Citizen Resources, Inc. (SCR) also has scheduled van services to take Seniors to the grocery store, doctor appointments, department stores, local restaurants, and other locations.
